I was watching this documentary Stories from the stone age and according to it, there has been significant craziness in the climate and it was what drove human to adopt and innovate new ways of living. I do not of course know how accurate this theory is but it is an interesting documentary. Also for the interested I would recommend Barbarians if you want to familiar yourself with the history of the german tribes and see past the propaganda that was recorded by the Roman empire and thereafter became history and for those who like multiculturalism, I found this documentary about Bronislaw Malinowski, the inventor of modern anthropology to be very interesting.

According to some, one major reason for the development of agriculture and, later, sophisticated exchange societies is the combination of population pressure and ecological dislocation. This may explain why (far better than Diamond's occasionally absurd views) why Africans Amerindians failed to develop beyond the pre-Conan stages; they never got rich or poor enough to be pushed into more specialized and personalized forms of organization.
